September/October/November at a Glance:
Reading: I am challenging students to read different genres this year. We have a "Genre Tree" that they can tell you about to help them track their reading. Ms. Dixon once again approved the Toronto Star for our classroom this year. We are lucky to get 8 newspapers delivered daily to our classroom. We are busy discussing many interesting articles in the Toronto Star, expressing our opinions and using our reading strategies along the way.
A great way you can help at home is to discuss with your child what they are reading: their opinions, what the reading reminds them of, what they enjoyed/did not enjoy, etc. The more they discuss what they read, the deeper their thinking becomes.
In October we will be participating in Student Votes (click on link for more information). We will be having a Student Vote day before the actual election.
Writing: We will focus on the writing process all year. This month we are using adjectives and adverbs in our writing to help the reader visualize (this ties into our reading strategy of visualizing). They have recently wrote a descriptive paragraph for our rock star wall. Soon they will be describing their dream bedroom. They will enjoy using their 'pretend' budget to buy items off the Internet for their room, and using their art skills to make a 3-D model of their dream room.
Oral Expression: We are beginning using our listening skills in class and responding in appropriate ways. We meet daily in a community circle and enjoy sharing stories, thoughts, opinions and having great discussions. This is an amazing class with so much to share. Way to go Grade 7/8s. Student Vote will give students a chance to make a mini skit/video encouraging people to vote. Also, we will have a Me, Myself and I presentation coming up in the end of October, early November where they will visualize and present themselves in our 25 year Room 11 reunion.
Media: The Toronto Star is a great place for us to learn about the techniques used in advertising. They will later use what they have learned by creating their own advertisement related to our History Curriculum.
